Constructed in 2006 and acquired by the Folkwang University of the Arts in 2010, the SANAA building designed by architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, partners in the renowned Japanese architectural firm, SANAA, is widely considered an architectural masterpiece with a ground-breaking energy concept.

Coinciding with Essen’s year as European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010, the creators were awarded the Pritzker Prize, the world’s greatest honour for architects. The SANAA building breaks the architectural raster of Zollverein’s former industrial buildings and combines heritage with modernity.
