The Zollverein coking plant was built between 1957 and 1961 adjacent to the Zollverein colliery.

From around 11,000 tons of coal, the plant could produce approximately 8,500 tons of coke per day. The salt depot, was situated on the so-called ‘white side' of the plant together with other facilities for cleaning gas and processing by-products.

In 2001, the salt depot was converted into an exhibition and event space especially to house ›The Palace of Projects‹ a permanent installation by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov.
